You Keep Running Away*

After the trauma of having to miss a Walking Football session on Monday due to a Bank Holiday (why do they always have these on a Monday?) Twenty Eight Members gathered for the week’s only SHWFC fix at Sutton on Wednesday night.  Those who know their 7 times table have worked out this gave us four teams, who lined up as follows: -

Blue - Andy Manager, Steve C, Les Meldrew, Lord Rainford, Robin, Cockney Rebel and Roy

White - Chris 10P, Jason, Little John, Subbuteo Dave, Eileen, Mark Dav and Joe the Ghost

Green - Barry Whizz, Deggs, Deano, Simon, Martin Mc, Wickie and Tom Derby

Red - Tom ‘Stretch’’, Long John C, Phil the Power, ‘Roger’ Moore, Citeh Geoff, Les H and Eamon

Sometimes in these sessions one team has a night to forget; and last Wednesday it was a bad case of the Blues. Things started off well against Green as they took a 2-0 lead with Steve C scoring both goals. But then Deggs put one past Lord Rainford in the Blue goals, Simon equalised, and Barry grabbed what proved to be the winner. Result not yet in for Whites v Reds I’m afraid. Video-printer piston and broke no doubt

Blue staggered across to Pitch Two with hopes to put their 2-3 Everton-like disappointment behind them (Other Premier League Clubs occasionally suffer embarrassing defeat) But playing the gleaming White things went from bad to worse as they went down to a 0-5 score. Things weren’t helped by some unforced keeper errors and some pretty awful passing. We were all to blame and I admit to having no idea who scored in this humiliation. Selective amnesia is a sure sign of ageing and/or humiliation Over on Pitch One  Red and Green didn’t quite match the one-sided game taking place at the same time, but Red still ran (walk surely?) out 3-0 winners with Eamon, Little John and Les H all scoring.

And so, to the final games. Could Blue improve. Er…only slightly. They soon found themselves three goals down to the rampant Red and then got a goal back through inevitably Steve C. Into the last 5 minutes ‘next goal wins’ said Les Meldrew hopefully.

Well, that worked as first Lord Rainford launched a shot well into orbit accompanied by the sort of language not heard at Cape Canaveral during the launch of the Apollo moon missions Red swiftly got a 4th from John C with a classy shot into the top corner to settle the matter once and for all. Shudder.

We’ve saved the best until last, folks. In something approaching a ‘proper’ game in their final match White and Green played out a cracking 4-4 draw. Jason with 2, Joe and Mark scored for White, with Deano, Barry, Tom and Martin for the Green matching them. Now that’s a bit more like it. Oh well Blue, there is always next week
