More about the insurance

Last season, we gave any club entering the National Cup, personal accident insurance for their cup squads. We also gave affiliated clubs and individual players the option to buy insurance for players not involved in the cup. This was our first step towards making sure players involved in our sport are covered by insurance.

For the coming season we have decided that this insurance should be an essential component for players at clubs that are affiliated to The WFA. By this we mean players, whether they are playing competitive games, such as our National Cup or not.

We have also listened to feedback from clubs, who like the idea of insurance but wanted it simplified and streamlined.

Based on this we have changed our affiliation for the coming season. Our new affiliation gives players at the club personal accident insurance. This cover is included in the new affiliation fee and covers existing players and any new player that joins the club during the season (April 1st to March 31st). This insurance covers players for all club sessions, and competitive matches in competitions approved by or run by The WFA.

This will mean that the cost of affiliation will increase to incorporate the cost of the insurance. We believe we have managed to negotiate a great club deal with the insurance company and we have discounted it even further to keep this cost affordable for all clubs. The option for a club based insurance policy wasn’t available last year, but now we are in year two with the insurers, they have agreed to a policy that covers the club rather than individual players.

  • Players will be insured for all WFA events and tournaments

  • New players are insured automatically on joining the club

  • Players will be insured for friendly matches

  • Players will be insured for all training sessions

  • All players aged under 80 are covered**

  • Insured players that play for more than one affiliated club will be covered playing for both clubs

  • Cover extends to WFA Approved games in Europe

  • The only insurance that will cover players playing in WFA events*

  • The insurance policy is with Aviva through Sports Insure

*Clubs that currently have insurance through the FA Bluefin scheme; that insurance will not cover players for WFA events, unless the event is approved by your club’s county FA. This was confirmed to us by Bluefin, but feel free to check the cover yourself.

** Our policy is a standard personal accident sports policy and they do not offer cover for participants 80 years old and over. There is no lower age limit, so players under 40 in the women’s game and under 50 in the mens game would be covered.

*** Referees courses are an extra cost per attendee.
